It is often said that shoes and warches are especially important in men’s fashion. However, I had no idea why these two things were so important. However, the other day, when I went to buy a custom-made suit for the first time in my life, I understood why shoes are so important.
I often listen to the Voicy streams of YouTube speaker Yoshihito Kamogashira. And there, Kamo-san said that “men’s fashion is decided from the bottom up.” This means that you decide in the order of “shoes→trousers→jakets.” I didn’t understand what this meant at the time, but I decided to try doing as Kamo-san said. So I bought good shoes first, and then I went to buy a custum-made suit wearing those shoes.
And when I went to buy a custom-made suit for the first time in my life, I was surprised by the variety of fabrics. There so many types of fabrics that I thought it would be impossible to choose one that suited me.
But at that moment, I remembered what Kamo-san said, “men’s fashion is decided form the bottom up.” And I realized, “I see, I just need to choose the fabric to match the shoes I’m wearing now.” And when I decided the fabric in that way, I was able to judge what fabric was best.
After that, when I was deciding on the detailed specifications of the trousers and jackets, I was able to make all the dicisions very smoothly by keeping in mind that I would start with the shoes and match them. Yes, shoes were important because shoes are the starting point of all fashion. If you start with no good shoes, everyting from therer on will be no good, aren’t you.
Now I finally understand why shoes are important, so from now on I will be more careful when choosing my shoes and take good care of them. By the way, as for watches, I still don’t understand why they are important. I guess this is something you won’t know until you actually buy it too.

靴が大事な理由
男性のファッションで特に大事とよくいわれているのが、靴と時計です。しかし、私はなぜこの２つが大事なのか、さっぱりわかりませんでした。ですが先日、人生で初めてオーダーメイドスーツを買いに行った時、なぜ靴が大事なのかが分かりました。
私はユーチューブ講演家の鴨頭嘉人さんのVoicyの放送を良く聞いています。そしてそこで鴨さんは「男のファッションは下から決めていく」と言われていました。これは、「靴→ズボン→上着」の順番で決めていくと言う意味です。この意味が当時の私には分かっていなかったのですが、とりあえず鴨さんの言っている通りにやってみようと思いました。そこでまずは靴だけは良いものを買って、そのあとに、その靴を履いてオーダーメイドスーツを買いに行きました。
そして人生で初めてオーダーメイドスーツを買いに行ったのですが、その時にびっくりしたのが生地の種類の多さです。生地の種類が多すぎで、その中から自分に合うものを選ぶのはとてもできないと思いました。
でも、この時に、鴨さんが言ってた「男のファッションは下から決めていく」というのを思い出しました。そこで私は「そうか、いま履いている靴に合わせて、生地を選んでいけば良いんだ」ということに気づきました。そしてそのやり方で生地を決めると、どんな生地がベストなのか、判断することができるよになりました。
そのあとも、ズボンや上着の細かい仕様を決めて行く際も、全て靴が起点になって、それに合わせるという意識を持つととてもスムーズに決めることができたのです。そう、ファッションの全ての起点が靴だから、靴が大事だったのです。その起点となる靴が適当なものだったら、そこから先も全て適当になってしまうのですね。
これでようやく私も靴が大事な理由が分かったので、これからは靴にはこだわりを持って選ぶようにし、お手入れもしっかりしていけたらと思います。ちなみに時計に関しては、なぜ重要なのかいまだに分かっていません。こちらも実際に買ってみないと、分からないものなのでしょうね。
