Hello? Can anyone hear me? （こんにちは！誰か聞こえますかー？）

When I was in junior high school, I used an English textbook called New Horizon. And there is a story in that textbook that I still remember to this day.
The story is called “Hello? Can anyone hear me?”. To summarize, the story is this.

One day, a big hole suddenly appeared in the ground.
Then a child cried out into the hole.
“Hello? Can anyone hear me?”
No reply came from the hole.

So next, the child threw a marble into the hole.
And then, that marble just kept falling and eventually disappeared from sight.
The villagers thought this was a good idea and started throwing trash into the hole.

Then one day, after some time had passed, you suddnly heard this voice coming form the sky.
“Hello? Can anyone hear me?”
Later, a marble fell from the sky.

The end.

It’s a little scary story with unrest ending.

But every time I remember about this story, I have something to think about. I wonder if we are doing exactly the same thing as the villagers were doing.

When today’s children grow up and hear a voice from the sky saying, “Hello! Can anyone hear me?”, what on earth will fall from the sky?

I want to make sure as many good things come out as possible.

こんにちは。誰か聞こえますかー？

私は中学生の頃、ニューホライズンという英語の教科書を使っていました。そしてその教科書にあった物語で、今でも覚えているものがあります。それは、「Hello? Can anyone hear me?」というお話です。要約すると、こんなお話です。

ある日、突然地面に大きな穴が空きました。
そしてある子供が、その穴に向かって叫びました。
「こんにちは！誰か聞こえますかー？」
穴からは、何の返事も返ってきません。

そこで次は、その子供がビー玉を穴の中に投げてみました。
するとビー玉はどこまでも落ちていって、ついに見えなくなりました。
これは良いと思った村人たちは、その穴にどんどんゴミを投げ入れていきました。

そしてしばらく経ったある日、突然空からこんな声が聞こえてきました。
「こんにちは！誰か聞こえますかー？」
その後、空からビー玉が落ちてきました。

おしまい。

という、不穏な終わり方をするちょっと怖いお話です。

でも、この話を思い出すたびに、私も思うところがあります。今の私たちは、村人たちと全く同じことをしているのではないかと。

今の子供達が将来大人になって、空から「こんにちは！誰か聞こえますかー？」という声が聞こえた後、果たして一体何が落ちてくるのでしょうか？

できるだけ、良いものが落ちてくるようにしていきたいものですね。
